When the Dollar Doesn’t Go as Far: A Critical Update from Ghana

Over the past several months, we’ve seen a dramatic shift in the Ghanaian economy that’s deeply impacting our work at City of Refuge Ministries. While the U.S. dollar remains strong globally, its value has dropped significantly here in Ghana, and that change is hitting us hard.
Compared to just a few months ago, each dollar now stretches only about half as far. That means our operating costs for food, housing, transportation, school supplies, and staffing have nearly doubled, even though our budget hasn’t.
Why This Matters
This financial shift isn’t just a number on a spreadsheet. It affects real lives.
It affects Kwame, who was rescued from child labor on Lake Volta and is now sleeping in a safe bed for the first time in years. It affects the dozens of children receiving counseling, discipleship, and a top-tier education at Faith Roots International Academy. It affects our staff, our outreach teams, and every family we serve.
And it’s why we need your help.
Our New Reality: A $20,000 Monthly Gap
To continue running our programs at full capacity, we must raise an additional $20,000 each month. This increase will help us cover the rising costs of:
Daily meals and housing for children in our care
Medical attention and trauma counseling
Fuel and transportation for rescue operations at Lake Volta
School supplies, teacher salaries, and classroom resources
Support for single mothers and vulnerable families in our prevention programs
Without this urgent funding, we may have to pause key programs or cut back on services that have been transforming lives for over 18 years.
What You Can Do
We’re inviting you to partner with us in a deeper way:
Become a monthly donor — or increase your current giving to help bridge the gap.
Share this need with friends, your church, or on social media.
Pray for provision, continued favor, and the strength to persevere in this work.
